Little Athletics

What it costs @ Springwood

The Springwood Little Athletics Committee believes every child should have access to an affordable, high-quality athletics experience. We are committed to providing well-maintained facilities and a supportive environment where young athletes can learn, develop, and thrive.

What is the uniform?

Uniform (TOP)

Tiny Tots are provided a special Tiny Tot shirt as part of their registration fees.  There is no other uniform requirements for this age group.

Athletes from U6 and up are required to wear a polo shirt, singlet, crop top, T-shirt or bodysuit in the approved Springwood Little Athletics colours and design, in accordance with Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) regulations. This uniform must be worn at all Centre competition nights and when representing Springwood Little Athletics at other competitions.

Athletes in all age groups may choose the uniform option they are most comfortable wearing, including a polo shirt, singlet or crop top, provided it is an approved Springwood Little Athletics uniform.

Uniform (BOTTOM)

Athlete bottoms should be in the approved Springwood Little Athletics uniform colour (maroon) or be predominantly black, in accordance with Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) regulations.

On regular Centre competition nights, some leniency is applied to allow athletes to wear pants or shorts they are most comfortable moving and competing in.

However, when representing Springwood Little Athletics at Regional Relays, Regional Championships, State Championships or other external competitions, athletes must comply with LAQ uniform requirements. Bottoms must be either approved maroon or predominantly black.

Athletes of any age may choose to wear shorts, bike pants, compression shorts, tights or leggings. For race walk events, there is a strict rule that shorts, bike pants and compression garments must be above knee length. Athletes competing in other events may wear full-length compression garments or tights.

A manufacturer's logo is permitted, provided it is no larger than 5cm × 5cm.

Friendly reminder: If you're purchasing new bottoms, we recommend choosing maroon or predominantly black items to ensure they can be worn at both Centre nights and championship events. If you're ever unsure whether a garment complies with the uniform rules, please speak with a committee member—we're happy to help.

footware @ Springwood

Good footwear is one of the most important pieces of equipment for any athlete.

Well-fitting athletic shoes help reduce the risk of injury, provide the support needed for running, jumping and throwing, and allow athletes to perform at their best.

Need a set of spikes?

We have a collection of spikes that have been donated to the centre.  If you would like a set (limited sizes), please speak to us.

What Shoes should my athlete wear?

The simple rule is that all athletes must wear comfortable, enclosed sports shoes while competing in any Little Athletics Queensland (LAQ) sanctioned track and field competition.
Athletes should choose footwear that is safe, comfortable and suitable for running, jumping and throwing events.

Friendly reminder:

Always check that shoes fit properly and are securely fastened before competition. Comfortable, well-fitting footwear helps athletes perform.

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR FOOTBALL CLEATS. THESE ARE NOT DESIGNED FOR ATHLETICS AND CAN DAMAGE BOTH THE OVAL AND YOUR ATHLETE

Do I need to buy shoes as well?

If your athlete is just starting out, there's no need to purchase specialised athletics footwear. Any comfortable pair of running or sports shoes is perfectly suitable for Centre competition nights and other competition.

If your child already has a pair of sports shoes that fit well and are comfortable, there is no need to rush out and buy new shoes. As athletes develop their skills and competition interests, you can decide later whether specialised footwear is worthwhile.

What about Spikes?

If your athlete is just starting out, please don't feel pressured to buy spikes.

For most athletes, a comfortable pair of running or sports shoes is all they need to get started and enjoy Little Athletics.

As athletes gain experience and become more interested in particular events, they may choose to purchase spikes, but they are never a requirement for participation.

LAQ Spike Rules
Under 6 – Under 10 (inclusive)
Spiked shoes are not permitted.
This includes spike shoes with spikes fitted or with blanks inserted.
Waffles (lugged rubber sole shoes) are permitted.

Under 11 – Under 12 (inclusive)

Spikes may be worn in all laned track events, jumping events and javelin.

Spike shoes without spikes fitted can not be worn in any event.

Under 13 – Under 17 (inclusive)

Spikes may be worn in all laned and unlaned track events (excluding walks), jumping events and javelin.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
Athletes wearing spikes must carry them to and from their event and remove them before leaving the event area (eg Finish Line / Long Jump)  They should not be worn around the venue (and must be kept in a bag when not in use)

Different venues may have specific requirements regarding the length and type of spikes that can be used on their track surfaces.

Friendly reminder:

If your athlete is new to Little Athletics, focus on comfortable footwear first and consider spikes later if they develop an interest in events where they are beneficial.

If you're ever unsure about spike rules, permitted spike lengths, or whether spikes are appropriate for your child's age group and events, just ask at the club—we're always happy to help.

Competitor Number

The competitor bib must be securely fastened to the front of the uniform top at all times. The bib is the primary identifier for each athlete and is used at Centre competitions to record performances and at external competitions to confirm athlete nominations.

For the 2026–2027 Season

  • Age badges and the Coles sponsor patch are no longer required, as these are now printed directly on the competitor bib.
  • Returning athletes will keep the same competitor number; however, the 2025–2026 bib must be replaced with the new 2026–2027 bib.
  • Bibs will not be mailed to athletes. Instead, they will be delivered to Springwood Little Athletics for collection along with your new season shoe bag—and a few surprises!
